Welcome to Capt. Hook's Medical Training in Austere Conditions (MTAC)

Advanced Wilderness Life Support (AWLS) Course

The Wilderness Medicine Course will instruct participants on how to identify, diagnose, and treat medical conditions that may occur in remote wilderness environments. Whether your interest or expertise lies in the realm of backpacking, hiking and wilderness exploration, skiing, mountaineering or white water rafting, to name a few, certification in this course will give you the knowledge and skill-set to handle situations in which there is minimal access to resources.

This AWLS based course consists of a combination of lecture and hands-on instructional sessions of mock-victim scenarios. This practical foundation in wilderness medicine will enhance your competency to assess patients and follow treatment guidelines for life support until further care or evacuation is available. A wide range of emergencies and conditions will be covered, such as hyper and hypothermia, high altitude related problems, moving and evacuating patients, avalanche, and infectious disease.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) and Capt. Hook's MTAC. The WMS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
